The Liberty Head Eagle, minted from 1838 to 1907, is a classic U.S. gold coin featuring the image of Lady Liberty wearing a coronet, symbolizing strength and freedom. It served as a key piece of everyday commerce when America’s currency was fully backed by gold reserves. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the Liberty Eagle reflects the expansion and ambition of 19th-century America. After the end of the gold standard and widespread government melting of gold coins in the 1930s, surviving examples became highly collectible.
